Last night my computer suddenly shut down while I was playing Rune. I started it up and same thing happened again after a few minutes. After several attempts to start it today it shut down or froze while it was booting. Sometimes while it was loading windows and sometimes I just got a black screen with a blinking cursor. My theory was that the power supply was the cause of it. So I pulled out the cable from the power supply and then put it back again. After that I managed to start it up. Probably it won't last very long before it shuts down again. So I guess I will have to get a new power supply to my dear computer. I can't come to think of anything else that can cause it.

Some time ago I had similar problems and I could also hear a fan that didnt work properly. When I looked closer I noticed the power supply was damn hot. So I opened it up and cleaned the fan. After that it worked properly again. Until now. The only difference is that the power supply doesn't get as warm as it it did last time.
I have an old power supply lying around some where. It has lower effect but enough to use for testing. If the computer gets better I know it was the power supply that caused it.
All tempratures are ok so it's not caused by overheating.

Usually such problems are caused by bad memory, failing hard-drive, corrupt windows or heatproblems like mundas mentioned. I don't think the power supply is the problem because it's happening so random, if the powersupply can't deliver enough energy I think the computer crashes before you even get into windows. You can always try another powersupply and see what happens, you never know. Also, I wouldn't open up a powersupply unless you really know what you're doing. Powersupplies have capacitors, they store energy. So even with no cables connected you can still hurt yourself or break your powersupply. I can recommend you to use some testing tools. I use Hirens Boot Disk for example, it's a bootcd with testing tools stored on them. I can't give you a link because of those piracy laws on this forum. You can run memtest to test your memory to be sure the memory is broken or not (you can also pull out some memory out of your slots and see what happens). Also, there is a whole bunch of hard-drive testing tools stored on it, all you need to know is the brand of your hard-drive and select the right diagnostic tool. Does this problem also occur in windows safemode?

Most of the times I had problems with computers freezing or shutting down it has ben related t heat problems. But I don't think it's a heat problem this time. It has been running ok since I last started it. I don't want to reboot it unless I have to. It can run great for days, or even weeks. But then when trying to reboot it can have problems startng. So I havn't tried running windows in safe mode. Cause then I have to reboot it. And since it can run for days without any problems it would take too long time before knowing if it is more stable in safe mode. The last couple of days I've heard some strange sound which I belive is from the power supply. I had a feeling opening up the power supply wasn't very safe. But I wanted to clean the fan and grease it a bit with some olive oil. Next time I'll think twice before I open up a power supply. I wonder how long it stores the energy? I think I have a problem with one of my hard drives too actually. But I havn't found any errors when I checked it. I think downloading buying a better tool for diagnostics might be a good idea.

harddrives have a so called SMART functionality which gives detailed reports about the disk health. the free program "speedfan" and show you this info.

My computer has been running ok for awhile now. It makes some noise once in awhile though. I belive it might be problems if I try to rboot it though. Still havnt tried another powersupply.
I tried speedfan and everything seems to be ok with the drives.

Still remember this dude from Sweden, went 'round the Dam with him shagging tarts. He shagged at least 6 that night, good man.
Space is infinite, it is dark, space is neutral, it is cold, stars occupy a few areas of space, as if seeking consolation in numbers.
In case of sonic attack on your district, follow these rules:
If you are making love, it is imperative to bring all bodies to orgasm simultaneously, do not waste time blocking your ears, do not waste time seeking for sound-proof shelters, try to get as far away from the sonic source as possible.
Your only protection is flight, if you are less than 6 years old, remain in the shelter and use your cocoon. You can help no-one else.
Only wheels are available. Metal, not organic limbs should be employed whenever possible.
Is that right?
Is that right?
Is that right?
Is that right?
Is that right?
Remember, you can help no-one else.
